Plastic Extrusion Process Types & Applications


Plastic extrusion process is primarily a polymer extrusion process that is used to result in plastic profiles of various shapes and sizes. A plastic extrusion process is not like the extrusion process for the other metals. The billet in this variant of the extrusion process is a powder or a pellet and therefore the procedure of producing plastic extruded profiles changes significantly from the regular billet based extrusion.

Extruded profiles made by the plastic extrusion process are utilized for a variety of purposes in the major industries like the electronics & light industry, electronic equipments industry, packaging industry and for other miscellaneous manufacturing and maintenance components for the manufacturing industry.

A variety of materials are used for making extruded plastic profiles. This is basically to make them suitable for varying needs of different industries. There are certain advantages of each base material that make them suitable for different types of uses. As per the material chosen for producing the extruded profiles accordingly the extrusion process to be employed also changes. Some of the commonly used types of plastic extrusion process are :


  • Free Extrusion Process – Horizontal & vertical
  • Blow Molding Extrusion Process
  • Cross Head Extrusion
  • Mono Filament Extrusion
  • Melt Extrusion
  • Coextrusion
  • Dual Durometer Extrusions

Each of these processes have their own advantages and disadvantages over each other, which are to be compared to determine which of the processes are suitable for a particular manufacturer's need. For example, the melt extrusion process requires small equipment set up, gives efficiency, economy and speed in the output results. Or say a cross head extrusion provides increased control levels over thickness of the cover wall, and easy removal from the base application.

It is important to have a thorough and accurate knowledge of the plastic extrusion process in order to be able to get desired results. Avoiding a mistake in choosing the suitable process is important to save on the financial and resource expenses that would just double up in case of a mistake.
