One common issue with boat trailers is the replacement of wheel bearings on it. Every person who uses or boards a boat trailer must know the basic know-how of replacing the bearings on it. Here's a step by step procedure to guide you through the replacement of bearing on boat trailer.
Step 1
First of all remove the dust cap to pry off. Now remove the cotter key and carefully remove the nut and washer which are holding the bearing cone. Once the nut and washer are taken off, pull out the hub to make the outer bearings fall out. Collect the nut, bolts, other bearings etc. and put them aside. Next, you need to remove the axle seal and the inner bearings to place them well away from the outer bearings.
Step 2
Now neatly clean each and every part and look for some damage signs or possible wear and tear. In case any of the part has worn off or damaged due to excessive heat, replace it. Now pack the bearing with ample amount of marine grease, this would help in keeping the air out of the system. Though it can be a daunting task as marine grease has water resistant properties.
Step 3
Now in the last phase, place the inner bearing properly back into the wheel hub. Install a new seal using a gasket sealer and put the tire and hub back again onto the spindle. Make sure that you dont damage the seal. Next, insert the place the outer bearing within it and attach it using a washer and nut. Now, line the nut with the hole within the axle and install a new cotter pin. Replace the dust cap and fill the hub with marine grease, using a grease gun.
