Types and features of wheelchair

Wheelchairs are designed as a substitute for walking, generally used by people with some kind of disability or injury. These chairs have wheels which are turned by the user by hand but modern wheelchairs are equipped with propelled motor or other such variant. In most of the wheelchairs, handles are provided behind the seat, so that someone else can push the chair. Some common types of wheelchairs are described below :
  • Manual wheelchairs :- Manual wheelchairs are self propelled wheelchairs which require human force to move them. The occupant of the chair turns the wheel on his own and hence the chair move further. One arm drive is also provided in these chairs to guide and propel it from one side. 
  • Electric powered wheel chair :- An electric powered wheelchair is moved with the help of an electric motor and navigational controls. It does not require any manual power which makes it more convenient.
  • Sport wheelchair :- Sports wheelchair is only used by disabled athletes for playing sports like basketball, rugby, tennis and racing. These chairs are not for everyday use and cannot be folded.
