Industrial Uses of Extruded Steel Profiles

Extrusion is a process which is used to produce objects having a fixed cross-sectional profile. Many materials are used for making extruded profiles including metals, polymers, ceramics, concrete and even foodstuffs. Steel is one of the very popular metal that is used for making extruded profiles that have varied applications in different industries. However, before knowing the uses of extruded steel profiles, one must know what are these profiles in the first place.

What is Extruded Profile?

Extruded profiles are basically long rods, pipes or railing like structures having different shapes. These products are made by pushing or drawing the metal through a die of the desired cross-section. These are then used for a number of manufacturing applications across various industries. The applications for extruded profiles include interior and exterior products like electrical components, cable raceways, automotive parts, trim parts, corner guards, housings, fairings, frames etc.

What are Steel Profiles?

When the metal steel is subjected to extrusion process, the resultant product is referred to by the name of steel profile. As steel can be easily shaped and is durable as well as fully recyclable, the demand for steel profiles has increased in various industries.

What are Industrial Applications of Extruded Steel Profiles?

Here is a brief description of various industries that use steel profiles along with some popular reasons for their preference over other extruded profiles.

Automotive- Steel profiles are used in automotive industry in form of hinges for doors of car and truck; as valve bodies for truck diesel engines as well as in high load car lifts. Their excellent resilience and low weight make steel profiles a favorite for automotive manufacturers and suppliers.

Railroad and Rail Track- For specific demands of rail track construction, steel profiles are widely used in railroad technology. Rail fasteners, power rail and stator pack hanger for magnetic levitation train etc. are some of its examples. Special profiles made from steel are also used for noise reducing rail system as well as in automatic sliding doors of trains and trams.

Heavy Machinery- Many heavy duty machinery like construction and agriculture machines also make use of steel profiles for their durability and capacity of withstanding tough situations. Frame profiles, slewing rings, clamping rails, blade-holder profiles, etc. are some of the examples of this type of application.

Materials Handling- Storage systems, industrial lift trucks etc. also use steel profiles. These profiles can withstand extreme stresses and strains and therefore they are suitable for heavy materials handling jobs. Steel profiles are used for various load capacities in equipment ranging from small stackers and heavy duty industrial forklift trucks to even high storage and shelving systems.

Construction Industry- Steel profiles are used for various construction needs such as for facade profiles for architecture projects, locking profiles for technically demanding sheet piling structures, expansion joint profiles for bridge building.

These were some of the major industries that use steel extruded profiles. However, their use is not only limited to these industries. Also, there are many more advantages of extruded steel profiles that depend upon the various extrusion processes.
