Invention of the rotating machine gave birth to concept of gear. Because of its energy reproducing property, it was used for raising loads and as pre-tensioners. The mechanical energy produced from the gear made it ideal for using as hoist for ship anchor. In ancient period, wooden gears were used. To enable rotation, it was designed with cylindrical clinch for cogs. Animal fat grease was used as lubricant. The acceleration of the water drew wheel was too slow and a set of wooden gear was used to maximize the speed. The gear arrangement used for powering textile machinery in ancient times are illustrated in the below picture.
