Bevel gears have sharp conical shape tooth which lets them fit together with the teeth of other gears at an angle enabling them to rotate. The conical shape tooth sweeps inward and this leaves only limited surface to draw on the teeth. Here are some tips which you might want to try for enhancing the life span of the bevel gear.
- Use a pumice brush to clean the rust over the teeth of bevel gear. If the rusting is tough, use a rust remover solution. The rust should be remove completely before using it for any application.
- Using 200 – grit sandpaper, buff the surface and teeth of the bevel gear, then finish up with 600-grit sandpaper. If the bevel gear is small, then to clean the teeth you can use a rotary polishing tool to get into the teeth division. No grit should be left. You can use a cleaning solution and a paper towel.
- Priming is must to protect the gear from dusts and dirt. You can prime the hub and teeth division as well. Brush the primer evenly on the surface. It is always better to prime flat so, to ensure proper priming, do it slowly and carefully. Dry the primer and if required, repeat the same process for the second coat.
- Now you can paint your design onto the hub or teeth. When swirling the brush, avoid the divisions for an alternating pattern.
